Yume Bitsu - Good Vibes 2002

Today we have Portland, Oregon based space duo Yume Bitsu off their one-sided ep Wabi Morning: Two Morning Expressions. This record was released on Burnt Toast Vinyl back in 2003, although the tracks were recorded in 2002 with their friends, Connecticut based group Landing. Unfortunately, Yume Bitsu is no longer active, however Adam Forkner has continued on, forming the drone/ambient group White Rainbow, which you can count on appearing here at some time in the future.

These works are beautiful examples of spacious guitar-based music that leave enough room in between the notes and Adam's sparse vocal phrases for the listener to drift off into a nice morning daydream.

Check it.

Deathprod - Treetop Drive 3

Interesting post today, one small little track amongst the brilliance that is the Deathprod Boxset released on Rune Grammofon back in 2004. This has to be one of the outstanding RG releases ever, compiling some of Helge Sten's most important experimental works into a gorgeous 4 CD boxset that comes complete with a 32 page booklet. These are the kinds of historic releases that make simply owning the MP3's wholly insufficient.

As I am feeling lazy again today I will leave you with a great little synopsis from a Discogs user:

Cultural history preserved. A big gracias to Rune Grammofon for this monumental release, which compiles the collected works of Helge Sten aka Deathprod in one beautifully designed black box.

A former member of cult rock band Motorpsycho and a current collaborator in the improvisational four-piece Supersilent, Sten is a self-proclaimed "non-musician" who likes to compare Deathprod to AC/DC - "it sounds the way it sounds" - but although his style didn't undergo any fundamental changes during the decade (91-01) where these pieces were composed, it's not case of "it all sounds the same", of one trademark form of expression being repeated over and over with minor deviations. So while this box shows a coherent body of work, it's also a varied listening experience - one can trace the evolution from the earliest experiments on the "Reference Frequencies" disc and up to the new "Morals and Dogma" album, but it isn't a simple linear refinement; this release documents experimentation and mutation as well as consolidation.

Deathprod's "audio virus" is the oft-cited key to his unique style; with a studio consisting mostly of antiquated machinery and several homemade "instruments"/devices, there is plenty of "mad science" at work in a Deathprod piece, a meticulous process of sound research and exploration forming the foundation of his work. The results are usually as dark as the box design or indeed the name itself; Deathprod is often the sound of decay, bleakness, austerity. But this isn't cliched "dark ambience"; Deathprod's subtlety and awareness of space makes his music immensely rewarding also after several listens.

"Reference Frequencies" assembles compilation tracks and previously unreleased material conceived over a long time span (91-97). The earliest cassette recordings have considerably shorter pulses, rougher edges and more discernible elements of noise than his later works - genuinely unsettling music. There's also a track that features an intriguing poem read by its author, Matt Burt, where Sten is absent until the four minute mark, where he carefully introduces droney soundscapes to give the piece a resigned, melancholic twist. However this disc also includes two amusing psycho-lounge-space-jazz collaborations with the Jörg Mager Trio and a piece that features violinist Ole Henrik Moe, so this CD is definitely the least consistent of the four in terms of style.

"Treetop Drive" and "Imaginary Songs From Tristan da Cunha" are previously released albums which nevertheless are almost impossible to find as the original releases (from 93 and 96, respectively) were very limited editions. "Treetop Drive" introduces a sound of a more linear and slowly evolving character, the first two pieces containing some quite disturbing/unpleasant sounds (one of the sources on the first track being a violin played by Snah from Motorpsycho). For me the third piece offers the most, with its dark atmospherics and sampled voice (from the radio) talking about the "desensitisation of death" - heavy stuff indeed. "Imaginary Songs..." was composed for Sten's graduation project at the Art Academy in Trondheim. The first four pieces feature recordings of violin improvisastions transferred to a a wax phonographic cylinder (the first sound recording device in history, patented in 1877 by Edison), then recorded to CD again; the resulting sound being very "thin" and, er, weird. Closing track "Contraceptive Briefcase" combines Deathprod's patented waves of Audio Virus with the voices of five women; the composition lasts for half an hour, but keeps momentum throughout - very intense.

"Morals and Dogma", a new album which was also released separately, completes the box. The harsh, abrasive elements of the early "Reference Frequencies" recordings have been erased completely here, and what's left are vast, droney, foggy "sculptures of sound" that appear monotonous on the surface but convey so much emotion and captivating mood that they're miles away from any functional "music that fills the room" definition of ambience; just like a Thomas Köner album, this is music that demands your attention. Overall this is perhaps the strongest of the four CDs.

"Morals and Dogma" also concludes the Deathprod project itself, as Sten has declared that this is now to be considered a closed chapter. Anyway this box certainly closes it in a brilliant fashion, as it effortlessly demonstrates what a visionary musician Helge Sten was during one decade of Deathprod. Very highly recommended.

Indeed.

Colleen - Bubbles On Which The Water Swim

Today's track is not new by any means, but great still. It comes to us from Colleen, Leaf Label resident and was released in 2005 on the album entitled The Golden Morning Breaks. Since I am feeling lazy today, I will share with you her biography from her Myspace page:

Colleen is a French musician working within a minimalist and melodic aesthetic using acoustic instruments and modern technologies . She has released three albums on The Leaf Label, " Everyone alive wants answers" (2003), "The golden morning breaks" (2005) and "Les ondes silencieuses" (may 2007). She has also released a live recording in cult series "Mort aux Vaches" on Staalplaat in 2006 and an EP made entirely with music boxes, "Colleen et les boîtes à musique" (the result of a commission by national French radio station France Culture), in october 2006. In 2007 she also completed her first dance score for Franco-Swiss choreographer and dancer Perrine Valli's "Série. While her first album was made up entirely of acoustic samples taken from an eclectic record collection, her second album saw her explore a music full of magical details - instrumentals filled with warmth, melody and soul, phasing in and out, on the verge of collapse – with Colleen playing all the instruments herself (cello, classical guitar, ukulele, music boxes, windchimes, and a rare 19th century glass harmonicon). But her last album, "Les ondes silencieuses", is a kind of highly personal tribute to the sounds of bygone instruments and their resonance : the deep sounds of the viola da gamba – the 7-string ancestor of the cello – are left to shine out on their own, while other tracks explore the spinet (a small harpsichord), clarinet, classical guitar and crystal glasses. Colleen’s live shows, with their wide array of acoustic instruments, reflects her deep love of acoustic sounds, and the occasional use of looping and delay pedals brings her live music closer to the layered feel of her albums. For the past five years, she has been playing live all over Europe, the US and Japan, giving more than 130 shows in often prestigious or original venues and in world-renowned festivals.

Oren Ambarchi - Bleeding Shadow

Today we have a release from the prolific Oren Ambarchi, who played an amazing show here in Minneapolis a while back with Boris and Sunn0))) at the Walker. This track is the B-side off of the 7" Destinationless Desire released by Touch Music.

Here is a little bit of the biography from Touch website:

Oren Ambarchi is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. His work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it’s no longer easily identifiable as itself. Instead, it’s a laboratory for extended sonic investigation". (The Wire, UK).

Ambarchi's work on harmonics and resonance has led him to define serene spaces of fluid, shifting sound that is both fragile and extremely physical. His solo releases Grapes From The Estate, Suspension and Insulation for UK label Touch, have transcended the guitar into a zone of alien beauty and sonic impossibilities to critical acclaim. In 2003 his live release Triste received an ‘honourary mention’ in the Prix Ars Electronica digital musics category.

This release is tough for me to post as there is deliberate ambiguity concerning the appropriate speed at which to play the record. Again, from the Touch website:

"As for the aspect of audience participation, we choose not to specify the RPM on the label, encouraging the listener to experiment with playback options and personal preferences. An attempt to make music that works at both speeds. The front cover might actually be the back cover..."

I have recorded it at 45 rpm because that is just what sounds right to me. At either speed, the track is a beautiful piece of experimental guitar music and should serve as a catalyst to seek out and purchase this and the other Touch Seven series releases.

Machinefabriek - Onkruid

Our first proper post here at Low Level Listening and it's the real deal. Coming to us from Rutger Zuyderveldt, aka Machinefabriek, Onkruid is a heavy, textual masterpiece which conveys an immense and foreboding sense of longing and loss. I agree with Boomkat in their acknowledgment of the emotional intensity required to absorb this piece. However, the reward is certainly worth the effort. One of the standout releases this year, Onkruid is truly a remarkable piece of music.

Released by A Room Forever and housed in a beautiful box with a c-print cover and a gorgeous little letter pressed insert. These guys are hand-stamped and individually numbered. 300 copies pressed.
